KOSTANDA Alexandre

Alexandre KOSTANDA

France (1921-2006)

Alexandre Kostanda was trained at Louis Giraud’s in Vallauris in 1936. He then started teaching ceramics in Biot, then in Côte d’Or where he was the professor of the four founders of Accolav ateliers. In 1949, he was back in Vallauris to become the director of the Louis Giraud atelier. Kostanda establishes his own workshop in 1953. He imported stoneware clay from Cluny, which can handle higher baking temperatures, and mixed it with Vallauris’ clay. His products, sensual and shapely evolved towards more refinement. Alexandre Kostanda kept a preference for muted colours, close to the natural colours of the clay.
