Sori YANAGI

Japan (1915-2011)

Sori Yanagi studied painting and architecture in Tokyo. He worked in the Tokyo design office of Charlotte Perriand. In the 1940’s, Yanagi was active as a product design advisor in Japan. He retained a traditional japanese sensibility towards materials and forms, and concentrated on efficiency, structure, and logic in products. Sori Yanagi designed wooden furniture, including his best-know design, the butterfly stool of c. 1955. Sori Yanagi was also known for his ceramics.
